What is art collab ?

Puttle is a web service that allows you to associate music from 5 proposals with a painting in a museum and then discuss your choices with other users of this web service. It is dedicated to musicians and attempts to reinvent the traditional museum visit.

Why puttle is an interesting project that reaches our target audience ?

Art Collab targets musicians because musicians have a particular interest in all art forms and are eager to combine visual and auditory art. Indeed, Debussy stated that he "loved images almost as much as music". This is why the exhibition Debussy, Music and the Arts at the Musée de l'Orangerie aims to show the presence of visual arts in Debussy's entourage, and to show how they have influenced him in the writing of his greatest works. There is a real connection between the auditory and visual arts, which is what Art collab aims to recreate.

Debussy, musicien esthète

In addition, the links between music and the visual arts are reflected in the fact that many painters, sculptors or architects play an instrument, compose music or simply enjoy listening to it while working. Seeing the music, listening to the painting: "Perfumes, colours and sounds respond to each other" writes Charles Baudelaire in the poem "Correspondences" of the Fleurs du mal.

See the music

This feeling is supported by scientific work on synesthesia, i.e. the ability to hear colours: to know more about it Musicians are therefore a particularly interesting target for developing an application like Art collab. There is a real desire on their part to be able to enjoy several arts at the same time.

Why artcollab reinvents the way you visit a museum and why is it interesting ?

The museum very often becomes an obsolete place and visiting museums lacks interaction. More and more museums are trying to reinvent the traditional way of visiting museums. Indeed, some museums provide visitors with period costumes or costumes to immerse themselves in an atmosphere, as is the case with the Charles Dickens Museum.

7 different ways to visit a museum

Music can therefore be a way to reinvent the visit to a museum because the musical experience allows a theme to be approached from a new angle. The Musée de l'Homme has already launched this trend by allowing visitors to discover the themes of the exhibition "Nous et les Autres" through musical trajectories.

Music to discover ourselves

Why Art collab goes further than its direct competitors ?

Art collab succeeded in bringing together the collaborative and sharing aspect, dear to musicians, in a museum visit context. It is on this point that art collab differs from its competitors. Indeed, the collaborative aspect already exists with Kompoz Music Collaboration, which allows musicians from all over the world to create music collaboratively via the web. But this web service has no links with museums and therefore neglects the link between visual and auditory art. This is also the case with sites like Deezer or Spotify which allow us to share our favorite songs with our followers through a playlist made public. On the other hand, the sonography in the museum (already present in many museums: museums of Orsay, Quai-Branly, Louvre...) does not imply the collaborative aspect between visitors. It remains in the background behind the visual works and is not the subject of any discussion.

Thus Art collab has the ambition to combine these two aspects in a single web service to reinvent an original way of visiting a museum for musicians.

How to use the ArtCollab WebService?

Let's get started

Send your image

You can use AJAX to call the ArtCollab. You'll have to pass an URL which links to an image, and will receive an array of musics matching the image in return. If you are using jQuery, you can use the $.ajax() function in the code snippet below to get started.

$.ajax({
url: 'https://artcollab.com/api/',
data: '{ "imageUrl" : "http://mysite.com/myimage" }'
dataType: 'json',
success: function(data) {
console.log(data);
}
});

Results

The API will provide you with a formatted object which contains an array with all the matching musics.

Beginning of the project

This part is in french, sorry ...

Context

This app is supposed to be developed nowadays, with current technological tools. This is an app you can download on mobile phone and digital tablet for free. This app is designed to be used during museums visits, in contemporary paintings and sculptures museums mainly. The goal is to make the visit more collaborative and to sharp artistic sense. Indeed this is so sad to see so many people interested in art visiting a beautiful museum each one on their own. They will much more enjoy the moment if they are able to share and learn from their different feelings on the masterpieces.

So the app is aiming to improve the current way to visit a museum because it is a too solitary pattern for the moment. The goal is to have artists get closer together during their visit. And this is also about challenging their artistic sense with a mixed-arts approach.

Target

This app is designed for the musicians in particular. They are a suitable customer category. First of all they have an interest in arts in general so they may be prone to visit museum, more than some other social classes. Secondly they are familiar with the collaborative et network approach. Indeed they may play music in groups but also in their job it is very important to be recommended and to have some contacts to get what you need (to be choose for the animation of a special event, to make the first part of a concert, to be granted the autorization to book a recording studio or a concert hall...). Finally musicians as artists have often a good material to listen to the music, so they can use it to completely explore the app offers.

Service offered

It offers musicians the opportunity during their museum visit to associate a museum work with a music. When they come facing a masterpiece they take a picture of it which is automatically identified by the app. Then the app will suggest 5 different pieces and will play each of them. The user can so chose, through a MCQ, what play is the most relevant one, the more linked to the masterpiece. Then the result are made public for all the app users, as a kind a survey result, and users can discuss the results. Indeed they will have access to a dedicated tchat in order to exchange and to explain their choices. This could help them to find inspiration using profesionals' feedbacks on their different feelings on the visual and musical combination.

Identity

Web interface

The project is related to web because it explores the collaborative aspect, the idea of network, a strong caracteristic of the web. The tchat reminds social networks using. The idea to share and to explain his opinions works also in the same way.

The user will access the service in different situations :

  • He is in a museum and wants to have a funnier visit, more suitable to his experience of musician. So he takes his mobile phone, log in, and starts with "What music with this masterpiece" directly on the museum.
  • He is with some friends and he wants to show some combinations of an work of art and a piece of music to discuss it with them directly. So he takes his mobile phone, log in and access "The community choices".
  • He is at home and feels the need to collect inspiration in the works of art or musics he saw in the app. So he takes his mobile, or tablet at home to have a better view on the work of art, log in and access "The community choices".
  • He is anywhere and he wants to share with musicians friends he met on the app. So he takes his mobile, log in, and clicks on "Tchat with other users"

  • Then the path on the interface is the following :

  • The user comes on the front page and he has to suscribe. He choses a username and provides some basic information (name,age, city, the instrument he plays)
  • The user arrives on the main page. There is the menu and the feed of other users activities. In the menu he can chose : "What music with this masterpiece" // "The community choices" // "Personnal pages" // "Tchat with other users"
  • If he choses "What music with this masterpiece", the camera is automatically opened and he has to take a picture of an art piece. Then the app recognizes the picture and propose a set of 5 pieces of musics. The user only has to click on each to have them played. Then he clicks on the button "VOTE" and he has to click on the music he thinks the most relevant for the art work. Otherwise he can also add his own music because he thinks this is precisely the music suitable to the piece of art he has just seen. Then he will automatically access the survey and see the music most chosen by the other users. He can access the list of users who have voted for each music in order to join them by tchat clicking on "Tchat with" when he reach their personal pages. He can also choose to share the survey and his own choice in it on his personnal page
  • If he choses "The community choices" he will have access to all the survey he has already taken part in. He can remember his choices, or share former surveys on his personnal page.
  • If he choses "Personnal pages" he will access a page with his picture and his username where he can share surveys of the app, personal articles or moods, pictures of masterpieces, screen of a debate with a friend in the tchat, himself trying to play the music he heard in the app, ect ect...Above this page there is a "resarch bar" to search and access others users personnal pages.
  • If he choses "Tchat with other users" he will access a platform where he can send messages to users, individually or in group. In this tchat they can also share musics, pictures.. The initial goal is to debate on their choices in the survey but they may also become friends and talk about their hobbies in general.
  • If he choses the littl button "Parameters" he will be able to adjust some technical points on the app.
  • When the user is accessing his personal page, he is using the web. When he is accessing the tchat with the app's community, he is using the web. The fact to take a picture and to vote is done in the app on a internal pattern but the strenght of the app is to allow the users to share their ideas and feelings thanks to a typical network pattern permitted by a web access.

    Benchmark

    • Kompoz : Kompoz Music Collaboration "Kompoz allows musicians from all around the world to collaborate online to create new original music". However this web service isn't related to museums visits. It is about the collaborative creation but actually it doesn't explore the link between visual and musical art.

    References

    • The whole Kandinsky work, he thought music and painting are deeply linked : "The idea of music appears everywhere in Kandinsky's paintings. He believed shades resonated with each other to produce visual 'chords' and had an influence on the soul."
    • Book : "Lorsque j'étais une œuvre d'art" by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt. The character of Carlos Hannibal is a painter while he is blind. That illustrates the idea we can understand painting in a differant way than visual way.
    • Scientific works on the synesthesia : the ability to hear the colors : to know more about it
